Well…this looks good. John’s Place. Add to to do list. After that, add lose the weight from eating there to my list.
Hiding in Tustin, John’s Place is mom and pop joint that has everything on the menu. I mean everything, from gyros to patty melts to pancakes to burritos. If you want variety, this is your calling. This time, I came for the Fried Zucchini. Tired of the bullsh*t where it’s all buttermilk and breadcrumbs. Where’d the vegetable go? If it’s going to be fried, might as well get some serving of vegetables. ”I swear Mom, no more fried foods!”… after this!

The premise of a day that was later turned into a gnarly food crawl. Eela was introducing me to bits and pieces near her new home which were discoveries that only push her closer to really loving where she now lives, for she’s less than fifteen minutes from all things good! To start, she took me to a small get-up in Tustin, called Free Soul Caffe. They cater to all vegan eaters and with seriously hearty meals. To think, my meal was only the half order! For about eight bucks, I was supplied with a massive sandwich and salad. Sandwich breakdown: Sprouts, cucumber, avocado, spinach, tomato, onion and a creamy horseradish sauce all between some lightly pressed sourdough. The side salad had an array of lettuce, tomato and a simple house dressing. What determined my real likeness of the place was the horseradish sauce and my drink, which was a chai granita with boba. When eating vegan food, I really want to be fooled by that faux, creamy consistency. I want to believe that I’m eating something that isn’t differentiated by limiting flavor and that’s exactly what my meal did. The creaminess of the chai, which wasn’t so heavy on the spice and more so milky and the smoothness of the horseradish sauce were what had me baffled in approval. The sandwich spread really complimented its bearings, making it more flavorful and the actual boba was the best I’d had besides lollicup. Eela had eaten earlier so she went for a sweeter finish. She got a peanut butter torte and a mexican hot chocolate which again were both totally fooling! Not at all limited in flavor, if anything, her dessert was very rich and throttled a full impact of peanut butter. It had what tasted like an oreo crust and darker chocolate to top with chunks also on the inside. Her hot chocolate didn’t taste watered down either and evenly spiced. T’was bomb! To think that later…within the span of a few hours…we ended up at two other food places. By the third destination there was nothing left for us to stomach, it was more for atmosphere and company. These haphazard travels are what always turn into cool discoveries, the places we always return to in good spirits.
